San Francisco 49ers Face Mounting Injury Concerns Ahead of Regular Season

The Comcast Corporation-owned NBC Sports Bay Area reported that the San Francisco 49ers’ injury list expanded on Wednesday, adding pressure to a roster already dealing with significant attrition. Defensive tackle Gracen Halton (ankle) and right guard Dominick Puni (concussion) were both held out of practice, adding to the team’s growing list of unavailable players.

Puni’s absence is particularly problematic for an offensive line that has been forced to shuffle personnel throughout the early stages of training camp. With Connor Colby working at left guard, the loss of Puni to the concussion protocol requires the team to rely more heavily on its depth. On the defensive side, Halton’s ankle injury compounds issues in a defensive tackle room that is already thin. The team previously waived Mikail Kamara with an injury designation after he tore his ACL, leaving rookie C.J. West to try and establish himself in the rotation.

The situation worsened during the session itself, as West and edge rusher Titus Leo both left practice early due to injuries. While their immediate statuses are unknown, extended absences would further deplete a front seven already managing the departure of Kamara. These latest setbacks add to a difficult offseason and camp period for the 49ers. The team placed wide receiver Ricky Pearsall on season-ending injured reserve due to lingering PCL issues. Additionally, the receiver room has seen Mike Evans (quad), Christian Kirk (calf), and De’Zhaun Stribling (hamstring) miss time, though Evans and Stribling have since returned.

The roster is also navigating the absences of running back Jordan James, who is out with fractured ribs, and tight end George Kittle, who opened camp on the active/PUP list as he recovers from a torn Achilles. Star running back Christian McCaffrey remains a focal point of concern as he continues to sit out practices with “tightness,” drawing scrutiny given his recent injury history.

While none of Wednesday’s injuries have been labeled as serious, the volume of ailments mirrors the injury wave the team faced last season. As the regular season approaches, the coaching staff’s assessments of Halton, Puni, West, and Leo will be critical in determining the roster’s health for the season opener.

What to watch

  • Updates on the status of Christian McCaffrey’s practice participation.
  • The severity of the injuries suffered by C.J. West and Titus Leo.
  • Dominick Puni’s progression through the concussion protocol.
