Michigan Solidifies Leadership Core for 2026 Campaign
The University of Michigan football program has solidified its leadership structure heading into the 2026 season, naming four players as captains following a team vote. Quarterback Bryce Underwood, running back Jordan Marshall, safety Rod Moore, and defensive tackle Trey Pierce will lead the squad, marking a continuity of leadership as all four served as captains during the spring.
Underwood, entering his second season as the starter, has focused heavily on expanding his vocal leadership. After passing for 2,428 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions last year while completing 60.3% of his attempts, he enters fall camp with established command of the offense. Coach Whittingham has reportedly graded his performance in camp as an “A-plus,” signaling high expectations for the upcoming season.
Joining Underwood in the leadership circle is Marshall, who is transitioning into a primary role in the backfield. Despite starting the previous season behind Justice Haynes, Marshall accumulated 932 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 150 carries. His momentum was halted late in the year due to a shoulder injury, but coaching staff, including running backs coach Tony Alford, have emphasized that his primary charge for 2026 is to lead by example.
On the defensive side, Pierce is set to step into a starting role for the first time. His selection as a captain, alongside his attendance at Big Ten media days, reflects the respect he has earned for his consistency and work in the weight room. Moore returns to add veteran presence to the defensive secondary.
The announcement of these leadership roles comes as the program prepares for a season that will be broadcast extensively across various media platforms, including those operated by major telecommunications providers. Comcast Corporation, a key player in the sports media landscape through its connectivity and media segments, currently trades with a market capitalization of approximately $89.4 billion. The performance of high-profile programs often drives significant engagement for broadcast and streaming partners within the sector.
