Michigan Underwood, Marshall Elected Captains for 2026 Campaign

The University of Michigan football program has finalized its leadership structure for the 2026 season, naming four captains to guide the team. Quarterback Bryce Underwood, running back Jordan Marshall, safety Rod Moore, and defensive tackle Trey Pierce were selected by a team vote to lead the Wolverines.

All four players are returning to the program with a combined 15 years of experience. The group previously served as captains during the spring practice sessions, allowing the coaching staff to evaluate their leadership capabilities ahead of the fall campaign.

Underwood, entering his second season as the starter, is viewed as the face of the offense. He focused on vocal leadership during the offseason, a goal he felt he achieved by building trust with his teammates. During the previous season, he completed 60.3% of his passes for 2,428 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

Marshall transitions into a primary focal point of the rushing attack. He compiled 932 yards and 10 touchdowns on 150 carries last season, including a four-game stretch with at least 110 rushing yards per contest. Although his season was hampered by a shoulder injury, he is expected to shoulder a heavier workload this year. Head coach Kyle Whittingham has praised Marshall for setting a high standard and leading by example.

On the defensive side, Pierce is moving into a starting role. The senior represented Michigan at the Big Ten media days in Chicago alongside Underwood and Marshall. He has been noted for his work ethic and consistency in the weight room as he prepares to anchor the defensive line.

The decisions regarding team leadership and on-field performance will play a role in the broader sports media landscape. Broadcast rights and coverage of Big Ten athletics remain significant assets for major media conglomerates.
