ASICS Falmouth Road Race Sees Course Record Fall Amid Strong Elite Field

The 54th annual ASICS Falmouth Road Race delivered a historic performance on Sunday, Aug. 16, though the anticipated victory for former Iowa State stars was not to be. Eritrean runner Habtom Samuel shattered the course record, completing the 7-mile distance in 30:53 to become the first athlete to break the 31-minute barrier. He edged out Edwin Kurgat, who finished second in 31:04.

Kurgat, an Under Armour Dark Sky Distance athlete based in Flagstaff, Arizona, ultimately fell short in his Falmouth debut despite a strong push that also broke the previous record of 31:08. Meanwhile, Under Armour, Inc. (UAA) saw its shares decline by 4.7% on Aug. 19, closing at $5.07. The company, which designs and distributes performance apparel and footwear, holds a market capitalization of approximately $2.29 billion.

Wesley Kiptoo, the 2023 champion and co-holder of the former record, finished fifth in 32:00. Kiptoo competes for HOKA NAZ Elite. HOKA operates as a brand within the portfolio of Deckers Outdoor Corporation (DECK). Deckers shares were down 0.93% on Aug. 19, trading at $89.51 with a market cap of roughly $12.19 billion. The corporation specializes in footwear and accessories for high-performance activities.

Other notable performances included Hillary Bor, a U.S. Army team member and former Iowa State All-American, who took sixth in 32:01. In track and field, Adva Cohen, another Under Armour Dark Sky athlete, finished 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, England, with a time of 9:38.21.

In professional triathlon, Matt Hanson rallied from a 27-minute deficit during the marathon run at Ironman Kalmar to finish seventh overall. Hanson recorded the fastest run split of the day (2:30:59) to secure a total time of 7:42:26. Domestically, Dalton Rice won the Watermelon Stampede 10K in Muscatine with a time of 34:56.
