Wyndham Clark’s BMW Championship Win Fueled by Heavy Putter, Titleist Irons

Acushnet Holdings Corp. equipment played a pivotal role in Wyndham Clark’s victory at the BMW Championship, as the golfer navigated a volatile final round at Bellerive C.C. to secure the win. After squandering a five-shot lead heading into Sunday, Clark relied on precise iron play and a specialized flat stick to outlast Masters champion Scottie Scheffler.

The decisive moment arrived at the par-3 16th hole, where Clark, tied with Rory McIlroy, deployed a Titleist T200 5-iron. He landed the approach 17 feet from the pin and drained the birdie putt to break the deadlock. He followed with a 13-footer for birdie on the 17th and another on the 18th to seal the tournament. The performance with his irons provided the necessary platform for his comeback after a difficult final round.

While the irons set up the scoring opportunities, Clark’s putter—a Ping Scottsdale Tec Ally Blue Onset mallet—garnered attention for its unique customization. Clark switched to this mallet model earlier this season at the Masters following a period of testing various putters. His specific setup is unconventional, featuring a 38-inch shaft and a Superstroke Revl Mid F/C oversize grip. To counterbalance the heavy grip, Clark applied several strips of lead tape to the sole, resulting in an estimated head weight of 400 grams, significantly heavier than the standard 340- to 360-gram range.

Despite a final round where he lost 1.4 strokes to the field on the greens, Clark ranked 10th in strokes gained/putting for the week, underscoring the club’s effectiveness during the first 54 holes. The putter features an onset design, positioning the shaft near the center line behind the top rail but ahead of the center of gravity, which encourages a specific stroke path.
