Underwood, who did not play during his freshman season, has spent the last eight months refining his skills under the guidance of new quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. and private quarterback Jordan Palmer. The coaching staff reports that the sophomore has made substantial strides in his mechanics and pocket presence, areas that were a focus during spring and summer workouts.

According to cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford, the difference in Underwood’s performance between spring ball and the current fall camp is stark. Gilford noted that the quarterback has made throws during camp that have impressed the defense, instilling confidence in the unit as they prepare for the regular season.

The technical focus for Underwood has been on footwork and stepping into throws, correcting habits that were less scrutinized at the high school level. Detmer, who followed offensive coordinator Jason Beck to Michigan, emphasized the quarterback’s dedication to the extra work required to adjust to the college game. With the offensive scheme installed in the spring, the summer was utilized to reset his mechanics, leading to a noticeably higher comfort level in the pocket during fall camp.

After a freshman year where he struggled with a 60.3% completion rate, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, the upcoming game will be an indicator of how the off-field translation translates to on-field production against live competition.
