Olympic Champion Alysa Liu Takes Season-Long Break to Refine Skills

Alysa Liu, the 21-year-old Olympic gold medalist, will not compete during the upcoming 2026-27 figure skating season. Liu announced the decision via social media on Tuesday, stating she intends to use the time away from competition to recalibrate and enhance her artistry.

The skater had previously been assigned to the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating series for the new season. However, Liu indicated that stepping back is necessary to ensure her future performances reflect her personal growth and technical evolution.

Speaking with Comcast Corporation’s NBC Sports, Liu elaborated on her plans to focus on specific elements of her skating, including spins and jumps. She noted that the decision was made in consultation with her coaches, Phillip DiGuglielmo and Massimo Scali, who were supportive of the move.

Liu assured fans that the hiatus is temporary and she plans to return for the 2027-28 season. In the interim, she expressed her intention to support her teammates from the sidelines.

Comcast Corporation, the media conglomerate that owns NBC Sports and holds extensive broadcast rights for major sporting events, was trading at $27.10 on Tuesday. The company operates across media, studios, and connectivity segments.
