Vikings Roster Decisions Loom for Struggling Quarterback J.J. McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings face a complex roster deadline regarding quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the former No. 10 overall pick whose performance has not matched the hype following his national championship victory at Michigan. As NFL teams reduce their rosters to 53 players, speculation is mounting that the Vikings could part ways with the young signal-caller just two years into his tenure.

McCarthy lost the starting quarterback position to Kyler Murray and is currently splitting second-team reps with veteran Carson Wentz. According to reports, NBC Sports has suggested the possibility exists that McCarthy may not survive the final roster cuts, particularly with Max Brosmer also on the depth chart. The team is reportedly considering whether to utilize two veteran quarterbacks to remain competitive rather than continue developing a player who has struggled to find consistency.

Financial considerations complicate a potential divorce. McCarthy’s contract includes $1.075 million in fully guaranteed pay for 2026 and $3.775 million fully guaranteed for 2027. While the Vikings would likely attempt to trade him to recoup value or offset these guarantees, they may need to pay a significant portion of that money to facilitate a deal. If a trade cannot be secured, the team might be forced to waive him.

The decision comes after a difficult sophomore season for McCarthy. In 2024, he recorded a 57.6% completion rate, passing for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His passer rating of 72.6 fell well below the benchmarks expected of a franchise cornerstone. In contrast, Wentz provided competent play last season, helping the team achieve a 9-8 record despite the lack of elite production from the passing game.

From a business perspective, the Vikings’ performance on the field drives significant revenue for their broadcasting partners. The team is owned by Zygi Wilf and plays in U.S. Bank Stadium, but the broader financial ecosystem involves media rights agreements with major broadcasters. For instance, Comcast Corporation, the parent company of NBCUniversal, operates through segments including Media and Studios. NBC Sports is the outlet reportedly discussing McCarthy’s roster status. As of the latest market close, Comcast Corporation (CMCSA) was trading at $27.10.

While releasing a top-ten pick so early is considered an extreme move, the Vikings’ priority appears to be maintaining competitiveness. Unless McCarthy can secure a firm role in the rotation, the organization may prioritize finding a trade partner to see if another team can redeem his potential.
