Derrick Brooks Expands Philanthropic Footprint in Pensacola Amid New USF Role

Former Fox Corporation broadcaster and NFL Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks continues to honor a pledge made to his late mother two decades ago. Before hosting the sixth annual Derrick Brooks Celebrity Classic golf event on August 17 at Pensacola Country Club, Brooks reflected on the promise to Geraldine Mitchell, who passed away from breast cancer in 2007. He recounted that she urged him to never forget his roots and to continue aiding the Pensacola community.

Brooks, a 14-year veteran of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has maintained a significant presence in his hometown through Derrick Brooks Charities. The organization currently supports eight distinct partnerships, including the Dixon School of Arts and Sciences, the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast, and First Tee Gulf Coast. His business portfolio includes a minority stake in the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, a Double-A minor league baseball affiliate, and he recently accepted a position as the chief operating officer for the University of South Florida’s athletic department.

The recent golf tournament highlighted the sustained local support for Brooks’ initiatives. The event sold out five months in advance, featuring 29 teams and creating a waiting list for the first time. The Blue Wahoos have served as a corporate partner since the tournament’s inception, with team president Jonathan Griffith and front office staff participating annually. This year’s field also included Miami Marlins prospects and Blue Wahoos players Colby Shade, Ethan O’Donnell, and Gabe Bierman.

Bonita Pulido, executive director of Derrick Brooks Charities, noted that the community’s response stems from the organization’s long-term commitment. She emphasized that their efforts are focused on supporting youth programs in Pensacola for the long run, rather than temporary engagements.
