ECB Eyes Free-to-Air Expansion as Comcast-ITV Tie-Up Looms

ECB Eyes Free-to-Air Expansion as Comcast-ITV Tie-Up Looms

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly preparing to restructure its media rights strategy for the next broadcast cycle starting in 2029. The governing body aims to increase the accessibility of the sport by offering more packages to free-to-air broadcasters, a move designed to broaden cricket’s appeal beyond its current paywall limitations.

Test matches in England have been exclusively available behind a paywall since 2005. Unlike Cricket Australia, which recently opted for a bespoke free-to-air package for domestic Tests, the ECB is not expected to create a specific free-to-air bundle. Instead, reports suggest the board is exploring arrangements where existing rights holders could share their portfolio.

A key factor in this potential shift involves the corporate relationship between broadcasters. Long-term cricket rights holder Sky Sports is operated by Comcast Corporation. Comcast is currently in the process of acquiring ITV’s broadcasting arm in a deal valued at £1.6 billion, with completion anticipated next year. This consolidation could facilitate a sharing agreement, potentially allowing free-to-air coverage on ITV while Sky retains primary rights.

For Comcast Corporation, the acquisition of ITV represents a significant expansion in the UK market. The company, currently trading with a market capitalization of approximately $96 billion, operates across Residential Connectivity, Business Services, Media, and Studios segments. Integrating ITV’s broadcast assets could allow Comcast to leverage cricket content across both its subscription platforms and free-to-air channels to maximize audience reach.

What to watch

  • Completion of Comcast’s £1.6bn acquisition of ITV’s broadcasting arm.
