IndyCar Logs Record Viewership for Washington D.C. Race

IndyCar Logs Record Viewership for Washington D.C. Race

Comcast Corporation subsidiary NBC previously held the broadcasting rights for the series, but this season’s coverage has shifted to Fox. The network’s investment in production technology for the Washington, D.C. event—including mounting a camera on the Washington Monument and deploying a 70-foot crane—appears to have yielded significant engagement. According to figures released by the series, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix averaged 3,282,000 viewers.

The audience peaked at 3,482,000 viewers during a 15-minute window in the mid-afternoon. This figure marks the largest television audience for an NTT INDYCAR SERIES race outside of the Indianapolis 500 since the reunification of the Champ Car and IRL series in 2008.

The broadcast has notably impacted the series’ cumulative season metrics. Prior to the Washington event, IndyCar reported a season-to-date average of 1,731,000 viewers through 14 races. The addition of the D.C. numbers lifted the average across 15 races to 1,875,000. This represents a 32 percent increase compared to the previous year and a 70 percent jump compared to the 2024 season on NBC.

While the Washington numbers are strong, other recent races have drawn lower totals. The inaugural race in Markham, Ontario, averaged 913,000 viewers the prior week. Earlier in the season, a race at Road America attracted 1,803,000 viewers, though that event benefited from a lead-in programming slot during the World Cup. Following that tournament, the season average had declined from 2,033,000 viewers through 10 races down to 1,731,000 viewers through 14 races.

Investors and analysts will likely look to upcoming events to determine if the D.C. viewership represents sustained growth or a temporary boost driven by unique location-based interest.
