Eagles Waive Preseason Standout Steele as Roster Limits Loom

The Comcast Corporation-owned Philadelphia Eagles are making difficult decisions regarding their 53-man roster ahead of the regular season. The team has reportedly released running back Carson Steele, a player who generated significant excitement among fans during the preseason, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Steele, who previously spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, emerged as a bright spot in an otherwise winless preseason for the Eagles. While the team rested most starters, the undrafted rookie showcased versatility, particularly in the passing game. His performance against the New England Patriots in Week 2 solidified his status as a fan favorite, despite a modest rushing output. In that contest, he recorded 12 carries for 33 yards but made a major impact as a receiver, hauling in six of seven targets for 84 yards and a touchdown. He replicated that efficiency in the finale against the Cincinnati Bengals, catching eight of nine targets for 52 yards and another score.

Despite the strong statistical showing, Steele faced long odds to make the final roster. The Eagles’ backfield is crowded with established talent, including Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, and Will Shipley. With limited snaps available on offense, roster spots for running backs typically require significant contributions on special teams or as blocking fullbacks—roles that ultimately did not secure Steele a position on the team.

Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), the media and technology giant that owns the Eagles through its NBCUniversal and Comcast Spectacor divisions, is currently trading at $27.06. The stock saw a move of 2.58% from the previous close of $26.38, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $96 billion. While roster moves are standard operating procedure for NFL franchises, the release of a popular preseason player often draws attention from the fan base as the final roster takes shape.
