Englishman Delivers Dominant Performance in Jerkens Memorial at Saratoga

Three-year-old colt Englishman solidified his status as a top contender in the sprint division with a decisive victory in the Grade 1, $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday. Ridden by jockey Jose Ortiz and trained by Cherie DeVaux, the heavy favorite won by 3 ¾ lengths, covering the seven-furlong dirt distance in 1 minute, 20.71 seconds.

While the time was slightly off the record-tying 1:20.40 he posted in the Woody Stephens Stakes in June, the performance displayed the same accelerating speed that has defined his season. Ortiz secured a clean break from the gate, establishing an uncontested lead through an opening quarter-mile in 23.01 seconds. Deep Flame, the Grade 3 Maxfield winner, made a bid to close the gap mid-race, but Englishman pulled away in the stretch under Ortiz’s guidance. Local Knowledge finished third.

Trainer Cherie DeVaux noted that the colt’s ability to sustain speed through the final furlong has become a significant asset. She credited Ortiz with refining the horse’s racing instincts, allowing him to clear the field early and dictating the pace. The victory adds another Grade 1 win to Englishman’s resume, though DeVaux did not specify his schedule leading up to the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland in late October.

The event took place at Churchill Downs Incorporated, a prominent operator in the live racing and wagering sector.
