Saratoga Race Course posted its second-highest wagering total in history during the 2026 Travers Day card, signaling robust engagement for the horse racing sector. The New York Racing Association (NYRA) reported an all-sources handle of $60,863,320 for the 14-race event. This figure represents a significant year-over-year increase of more than $6 million compared to the $54,309,929 wagered during the 2025 edition.

While the handle surged, paid attendance dipped slightly to 47,659, a decrease of roughly 600 fans from the 48,255 recorded in 2025. Despite the marginal decline in attendees, on-track betting activity rose, with $11,197,855 wagered on-site compared to $10,369,950 last year. The financial performance places the 2026 event just behind the record set in 2024, when Fierceness’s victory helped drive $63,023,405 in total wagers.

The on-track action highlights the continued importance of major stakes races in driving revenue for racing operators. While NYRA is a non-profit, the metrics offer insight into the broader sports wagering market. Publicly traded peers in the gambling and racing space, such as Churchill Downs Incorporated, operate similar business models encompassing live racing, historical wagering, and online betting platforms. As the industry continues to evolve toward digital channels, the ability to maintain high handle levels for marquee events remains a key indicator of market health.

On the track, Leading Change secured the victory in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes, rallying past Napoleon Solo in the stretch for jockey Manny Franco and trainer Brad Cox. Golden Tempo, the winner of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, finished third. The card also featured Grade 1 wins by Ways and Means, Englishman, Hymn, and Fully Subscribed. The day began with a notable win for Club Reign, co-owned by former NFL quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife Ciara.
