Cowboys Add Depth to Backfield with Waiver Claim

The Dallas Cowboys have made a roster adjustment ahead of the regular season, claiming running back Emari Demercado off waivers. The move comes after the running back was released by the Kansas City Chiefs as teams trimmed their rosters to the 53-man limit. Dallas created an open spot on the roster after previously moving on from running backs Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah.

Demercado now joins a running back room led by Javonte Williams and Malik Davis. He brings previous NFL experience to the group, having spent the 2023 through 2025 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before his brief stint in Kansas City. During the 2025 season, Demercado posted 44 carries for 312 yards. Over the course of his career, he has accumulated 126 carries for 819 yards and three touchdowns. He has also contributed in the passing game, recording 50 receptions for 324 yards and one touchdown.

The Cowboys are looking to rebound after a 2025 season where they posted a 7-9-1 record and missed the postseason. Their last playoff appearance was during the 2023 season. Dallas will begin the 2026 campaign on Sept. 13, hosting the New York Giants. The game is scheduled for an 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff on NBC, marking the first “Sunday Night Football” contest of the year. NBC is a division of Comcast Corporation, which currently sees its stock trading at $26.78 following a recent decline.
