Kaepernick Criticizes NFL Practices on Protest Anniversary

Colin Kaepernick has publicly criticized the National Football League (NFL) regarding his employment status a decade after his protests against police brutality began. In a recent interview, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback stated that he continues to be excluded from the league and described the organization as “disingenuous.”

Kaepernick, who led the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII during the 2012 season, has not played in the NFL since 2016. He claims the league has colluded to keep him out of the sport following his decision to kneel during the national anthem. He alleged that despite his performance record, which included a Super Bowl appearance and an NFC Championship, teams were instructed not to offer him a workout.

The quarterback noted that he specifically recalls interest from coaches, including John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens, that was blocked by upper management. Furthermore, Kaepernick described a 2017 meeting with the Seattle Seahawks where he was questioned about his political beliefs, suggesting such lines of questioning would be legally actionable in other industries.

The interview comes as the 38-year-old prepares to release a new book, “The Perilous Fight,” later this month. The publication details the origins of his protests, which he credits to former teammate Eric Reid, and reflects on the backlash he received from fans and political figures.

When asked about the NFL’s response to social justice movements in 2020, Kaepernick dismissed the league’s statements as performative. While the NFL has pointed to its “Inspire Change” initiative and contributions totaling more than $575 million, Kaepernick maintained that he has not seen evidence of material change within the organization. The league has stated that the issues he raised remain a priority.

Football games are televised across major networks, including those owned by media conglomerates like Comcast Corporation. As the parent company of NBC, which conducted the interview, Comcast holds a significant stake in sports broadcasting through its media segment. Shares of Comcast are currently trading lower.
