Prime Video lands exclusive local streaming rights to six more NHL clubs

The National Hockey League is shifting more of its regional game coverage to streaming. Amazon announced a multi-year agreement that grants Prime Video exclusive local streaming rights for six NHL franchises beginning with the 2026-2027 season: the Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, and St. Louis Blues.

Under the deal, fans inside each club’s regional territory will watch games — along with pre- and post-game shows and other team programming — through Prime Video. Each team will separately lay out the details of its own subscription package for its market. Out-of-market viewers will continue to have access via NHL Center Ice.

The move deepens Amazon’s already substantial presence in regional sports. Prime Video’s platform currently carries coverage for the Seattle Kraken along with several regional sports networks, including MSG Networks, CHSN, NESN, SNY, YES Network, and Marquee Sports Network, plus NBC Sports Network RSNs in Boston, Philadelphia, and the Bay Area. With the new agreement, the total count of NHL clubs with exclusive local streaming on the service rises to seven.

NHL Chief Media Officer and Senior Executive Vice President David Proper said the league explored multiple options before presenting them to the clubs. In remarks to Sports Business Journal, he noted that league officials negotiated with several prospective partners and put a range of proposals to each team, with the six clubs ultimately selecting Amazon’s offer. In a statement, he framed the deal as a response to fan behavior, saying viewers want a simple way to locate and follow their teams and that the arrangement gives clubs flexibility as the media market evolves.

The agreement underscores the ongoing migration of regional sports rights from traditional cable distributors toward streaming platforms — a shift that has weighed on legacy media and telecommunications companies with major cable and content portfolios. Comcast, a Communication Services company whose Media segment includes NBCUniversal and which trades at $26.81, up 1.64% from a previous close of $26.38, operates in the same contested landscape where leagues are reevaluating how local game broadcasts reach viewers. Its market capitalization stands at roughly $94.4 billion.

Amazon’s sports ambitions continue to broaden beyond national packages; the company said its sports coverage is viewable across browsers and the Prime Video app on compatible devices, and reports suggest more local team coverage will be added over time.
