49ers edge depth under strain as Okuayinonu sits out trip to Australia

49ers edge depth under strain as Okuayinonu sits out trip to Australia

The San Francisco 49ers’ pass-rush depth is being tested before the regular season even begins. Multiple team reporters reported late Wednesday that defensive end Sam Okuayinonu did not board the flight with the rest of the roster to Australia, where the club is preparing for its Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. The 27-year-old is managing a foot injury and carries a questionable designation for the opener.

There remains a possibility that Okuayinonu makes the trip separately and plays, but his absence from the team charter — per NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, every other player traveled — suggests his availability is genuinely in doubt.

Thinning group at defensive end

The timing is difficult for a position group that was already shorthanded. Star edge rusher Nick Bosa participated in team drills Wednesday for the first time since his injury, an encouraging step in his recovery, though getting to full football shape in roughly a week is a tall order. Bosa and Okuayinonu were penciled in as the top two options at defensive end and the unit’s primary run defenders.

Behind them, the rotation gets thin quickly. Keion White profiles more as an interior player, while rookie Romello Height — drafted as a pass-rush specialist but competitive against the run this preseason — has himself been sidelined at practice with an ankle issue. If Height keeps missing time, the front office may need another roster move on top of the expected practice-squad elevation of Ogbo Okoronkwo, which was likely even before Okuayinonu’s status surfaced.

Tactical ripple effects

With bodies short, coordinator Raheem Morris could lean on defensive tackles Alfred Collins and CJ West for extra interior pressure, while White absorbs more edge reps than planned. The situation may also accelerate the involvement of rookie Jaden Dugger, potentially in five-man fronts with him aligned near the line of scrimmage. That look might have been coming anyway given how frequently the Rams deploy three-tight-end personnel.

For broader context, NFL coverage remains a cornerstone of national sports media ecosystems. Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), part of the Communication Services sector, trades at $26.92, up 0.13% from its previous close of $26.88, with a market capitalization of roughly $94.4 billion — reflecting the scale of the media companies that carry games like this weekend’s opener to audiences worldwide.

What to watch

  • Whether Okuayinonu travels to Australia separately and clears the questionable designation before kickoff.
  • Nick Bosa’s practice participation through the week and any conditioning limitations.
  • Romello Height’s ankle status and whether the 49ers make additional roster moves at defensive end.
  • Any official elevation of Ogbo Okoronkwo from the practice squad ahead of the Rams game.
