Connor Onion Steps Into Fox’s No. 2 College Football Booth With RG3 by His Side

Connor Onion will make his debut as a permanent member of Fox’s second college football announcing crew Friday night, calling Fresno State’s road matchup at Southern California alongside analyst Robert Griffin III and sideline reporter Alexa Landestoy.

Speaking with Front Office Sports ahead of the opener, Onion said he already has chemistry with his new booth mates. He filled in on the same crew last season when Jason Benetti moved up to the NFL for a week, calling a TCU-Colorado game with Griffin and Landestoy. Onion recalled that the two approached him afterward to tell him he belonged and that the game had not felt like a temporary assignment. The voice of the new crew said he is eager to build on that single outing with a full 15-to-16-game season together.

Onion acknowledged that Griffin, the former Baylor and NFL quarterback, is an unconventional analyst who does not “color inside the lines.” Rather than viewing that as a challenge, Onion described the pairing as an opportunity, noting that broadcasts with Griffin blend X’s-and-O’s analysis with pop culture references and unpredictable tangents. He said his prior work with veteran broadcaster Bill Raftery, also known for an off-the-cuff style, has prepared him to adapt quickly to whatever the moment brings.

The conversation also touched on Onion’s favorite venues. He called Colorado’s stadium — energized by the arrival of coach Deion Sanders and the surrounding scenery — an underrated destination when it is full. He named a trip to BYU in Provo, Utah, scheduled for Week 2, as a stop he is looking forward to for the first time, and said he hopes to eventually call games at Ohio State and Michigan.

The broadcast represents another piece of Fox’s college football lineup. Fox Corporation, whose entertainment portfolio spans cable network programming and television, saw shares close at $65.57, down 3.22% from the prior close of $67.75, valuing the company at roughly $27.7 billion.
