Harper Murray’s Authenticity Is Redefining the Business of College Volleyball Stardom

Harper Murray realized her fame had crossed into something new on a Wednesday evening last August, when adidas-style brand marketing came to her literally: her image projected onto a building in Lincoln’s Haymarket District, with her face even appearing on coffee cups at a nearby café. The campaign positioning Murray as the face of college volleyball, it turns out, worked.

A three-time All-American at Nebraska, Murray has become the most recognizable athlete on campus — and increasingly, well beyond it. She earns hundreds of thousands of dollars through name, image and likeness deals plus a revenue-sharing arrangement with the university, a sign of how commercially valuable individual stars in women’s college volleyball have become as the sport’s media footprint expands. That growth sits within a broader media landscape dominated by giants like Comcast and other networks bidding for live college sports content.

Murray’s reach is quantifiable: more than 900,000 followers on TikTok and roughly 395,000 on Instagram. Her camp credits that following to candor rather than curation. She has spoken openly about losing her father, Vada, to cancer in 2011, when she was 6, and about personal missteps two years ago that she has since parlayed into a leadership role on the No. 1-ranked Huskers at age 21.

“I’m an open book,” Murray said, acknowledging that the approach can occasionally create problems but arguing it is precisely what fans connect with. “People can see that I’m not just an athlete.”

Her celebrity now draws famous spectators. Nebraska played an exhibition at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium, where former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver and basketball great Candace Parker watched courtside — Parker said she came specifically to support Murray. The Huskers then traveled to Las Vegas for the Players Era Volleyball Showcase, where Tom Brady appeared for Nebraska’s match against UNLV. The connection is generational: Vada Murray played safety at Michigan from 1987 to 1990 and later spoke to Wolverines teams in the late 1990s, when Brady was the quarterback, and the two met again in New York around this year’s ESPYs.

With a star-laden senior class chasing the program’s first national championship, Murray’s profile gives both Nebraska and the sport a marketable centerpiece at a moment when college volleyball is drawing larger arenas and national broadcast attention.

What to watch

  • Nebraska’s matchup with Missouri in the Big Ten-SEC Challenge headliner this Sunday, played on a specially constructed court.
  • The Huskers’ pursuit of a first national title with this senior class.
  • Further brand and NIL activity around Murray as the season progresses.
