Kentucky Downs Puts Up Millions as International Turf Stars Descend on Franklin
Kentucky Downs’ unique turf course takes center stage this weekend, with more than $8 million in purses spread across a series of high-stakes races that have drawn entries from Europe and some of North America’s top stables.
The headline event is Saturday’s $3 million Grade II Nashville Derby, where jockey Ryan Moore makes his first-ever riding appearance at the track. Moore partners with Causeway, a Wootton Bassett colt racing for Coolmore and trainer Aidan O’Brien. The colt had won four consecutive starts before a seventh-place finish in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris on soft going. Three other international runners are entered, and the American-based runners appear to face a demanding task over the 1 3/16-mile, undulating layout.
Saturday’s $2 million Grade II Kentucky Downs Turf Cup Invitational serves as a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Turf on Oct. 31 at Keeneland. Ethical Diamond, the surprise winner of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf in course-record time at Kentucky Downs, returns despite a 1-for-3 record since that victory. He faces fellow European raiders Fort George and Tiffany, plus Burnham Square, the resurgent Arlington Million winner.
In turf sprint action, an overflow field is expected for the $1.75 million Grade II Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint, also a Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint qualifier. Troubleshooting leads the morning line at 3-1, followed by John the Beer Man at 4-1 and My Boy Prince at 9-2. The $1.5 million Grade II Music City for 3-year-old fillies features Cy Fair, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner, with two wins and a close third from three starts this season.
Classic Q, the odds-on morning-line favorite for the $1.5 million Grade II Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf, arrives on a two-race win streak that includes the Grade II Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill Downs and the Grade I Just a Gleam at Saratoga.
The weekend’s action also has commercial significance for Churchill Downs Incorporated (NASDAQ: CHDN), whose namesake track hosted Classic Q’s latest prep and whose wagering and gaming operations intersect with the sport’s biggest meets. The company’s shares closed recently at $90.28, up 1.23% on the day from a prior close of $89.18, with a market capitalization of roughly $6.10 billion.
Beyond the stakes events, Sunday’s $300,000 Grade I Del Mar Futurity features a seven-horse field split between Bob Baffert (Hughes, 2-for-2 after a Best Pal win, and one other) and Doug O’Neill, who saddles three runners.
