Yorkshire Dales Gear Up for Tour of Britain’s Toughest Test Yet

Towns and villages across North Yorkshire are making final preparations for Saturday’s fourth stage of the Tour of Britain men’s race, a 103-mile (166km) route from Helmsley to Leyburn that many expect to shape the overall outcome of the event.

With 8,800ft (2,699m) of climbing packed into the course, British Cycling has flagged the stage as potentially decisive in determining the overall winner. Communities along the route have received nearly £10,000 in funding to build displays and decorations celebrating the race’s passage through the region.

A Brutal Day in the Saddle

The peloton departs Helmsley at 11:00 BST, rolling through Easingwold, Boroughbridge, and Ripon before turning into the Dales. After Pateley Bridge, riders confront a steep ascent of Greenhow Bank toward Grassington, a climb that Stuart Price, owner of the Dales Bike Centre, describes as unforgiving. The route then crosses Kidstones Pass into Wensleydale, passing Aysgarth Falls before a technical descent toward Grinton and a subsequent rise up what the Tour de France previously labelled the “Côte de Grinton Moor.”

Leyburn will host the finish at approximately 15:10, marking the first time the town has ended a Tour of Britain stage in the race’s modern era. Local cycling advocates have welcomed the honour, pointing to Yorkshire’s reputation as some of the country’s best riding terrain.

Travel Disruptions

Rolling road closures will operate along most of the route, alongside parking suspensions. Fixed closures are scheduled on Greenhow Hill (11:00–14:00), the B6160 in Bishopdale (12:30–14:30), and Greets Moor and Grinton Moor (12:30–15:00), with diversions in place for each.

Cycling Economy in Focus

Events like the Tour of Britain tend to shine a spotlight on the broader cycling and fitness sector, from grassroots bike shops to publicly traded connected-fitness companies. Among the latter, Peloton Interactive — which sells its connected Bike, Tread, and Row products across North America and internationally — traded at $5.38 on Friday, up 0.92% from a previous close of $5.3308, giving the consumer-cyclical company a market capitalisation of roughly $2.39 billion. While mass-participation events such as the Tour do not directly move connected-fitness revenues, industry watchers often track spectator enthusiasm around professional racing as a soft indicator of cycling’s cultural footprint.

What to watch

  • Stage results from Leyburn on Saturday and their effect on the general classification.
  • Rider and team performance on the Greenhow Bank and Grinton Moor climbs.
  • Local reporting on spectator turnout and economic impact for Dales businesses.
  • Upcoming earnings and guidance from cycling-adjacent public companies, including Peloton’s next quarterly report.
