Marco Brenner claimed the biggest victory of his young career on Saturday, winning stage 14 of the Vuelta a Espana, while overall leader Enric Mas strengthened his position with a commanding ride up the Sierra de la Pandera — the Andalusian climb where his grand tour hopes have unraveled before.
Brenner, 24, was part of a four-rider group that went clear on the category-one final ascent. The German had to respond to a late attack from king of the mountains leader Santiago Buitrago, bridging across before easing past the Colombian in the final kilometre. It was his first grand tour stage win and only the third professional victory of his career, an impressive result given he had battled illness and a crash earlier in the race.
“I cannot really believe it yet,” Brenner said afterward, adding that he began believing in his legs as the final climb unfolded. “You live for days like today.”
Mas Flips the Script on the Pandera
The day carried added weight for Mas. When the Vuelta last climbed the Sierra de la Pandera in 2022, he lost crucial time to Primoz Roglic — one of two editions in which the Spaniard finished runner-up to the Slovenian. This time the outcome was reversed: Mas attacked on the upper slopes and took another 25 seconds out of his rivals, with his Movistar squad once again executing sharp tactics.
Mas now leads the general classification with a cushion of more than two minutes. Austria’s Felix Gall sits second at 2’06” after staying glued to Mas’s wheel, leapfrogging Roglic, who slipped to third at 2’10”.
How the Stage Unfolded
The 154.5km run from Jaen featured the last major mountain test of the race’s second week. A large breakaway formed early, with Kevin Vermaerke of UAE Team Emirates-XRG launching a solo move with 53km remaining. His effort was reeled in by Georg Steinhauser with 14km to go before the decisive quartet emerged on the punishing final climb — 11.8km at an average of 7.5%, with ramps reaching 15-17%.
Gall’s day came at a cost: after losing Gregor Muhlberger on stage 13, he also saw Jordan Labrosse abandon mid-stage, thinning his support ahead of a demanding final week and tilting the tactical balance further toward Movistar. Richard Carapaz, winner here in 2022, attacked from the reduced favourites group but faded along with Roglic.
