Dan Hicks Kicks Off 35th NBC Sports Season With Notre Dame-Wisconsin at Lambeau Field

Veteran broadcaster Dan Hicks reaches his 35th year at NBC Sports this weekend, marking the milestone with Sunday night’s Notre Dame-Wisconsin matchup at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, a neutral-site game in the Fighting Irish’s Shamrock Series.

Hicks, who joined the network in 1992 after three years at CNN, said hitting the 35-year mark feels even more significant than the 30-year milestone. He credited both longevity and the network’s continued portfolio of marquee properties — Notre Dame football, golf, and Olympic swimming and skiing — for keeping him in one place for so long.

Though he is now one of NBC’s most recognizable play-by-play voices, Hicks had never held the role before arriving at the network. His first crack came calling regional NFL coverage from 1992 through 1997, when NBC held the AFC package, working alongside analysts including Joe Namath, Joe Gibbs, Jim Kelly, Bob Trumpy and Cris Collinsworth. Hicks said rotating through so many broadcast partners early on taught him to adapt his calls to different styles — experience he considers foundational to his career.

Beyond college football, Hicks is best known as NBC’s lead golf announcer and for calling Olympic swimming alongside analyst Rowdy Gaines, a partnership that will extend to a ninth Games at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The duo famously documented Michael Phelps’ eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games and Katie Ledecky’s 14 medals across four Olympics from 2012 to 2024. Hicks said Phelps deserves credit for elevating swimming into year-round television property, noting that Gaines now covers more non-Olympic swimming events than he ever expected.

Golf remains Hicks’s favorite sport to call. He has been on the microphone for 27 Tiger Woods tournament victories, including three U.S. Open wins, and has also covered the Ryder Cup, PGA Tour and British Open.

2025 marks Hicks’s seventh season on Notre Dame football — he previously held the role from 2013 to 2016 before returning in 2024. He said the standalone Sunday night window adds to the appeal of the Lambeau Field setting.
