Greg Papa Cleared to Return to Air 190 Days After Bone-Marrow Transplant

Longtime Bay Area sportscaster Greg Papa is set to return to broadcasting on Thursday, roughly six months after undergoing a bone-marrow transplant in his battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer diagnosed before the 2025 NFL season.

Papa, 63, will appear as a studio analyst on NBC Sports Bay Area’s “49ers Pregame Live” ahead of San Francisco’s regular-season opener against the Rams in Australia, and he is slated for the same role on the network’s postgame show alongside Dave Feldman. He has also been medically cleared to resume his radio duties as early as Week 2, when the 49ers host the Dolphins.

The speed of the recovery stands out even to his physician. Dr. Aaron C. Logan, the oncologist overseeing Papa’s care, declined to characterize the comeback as “remarkable,” but noted that only a minority of patients reach the point of considering a return to meaningful work six months after a transplant of this kind. Studies indicate patients who undergo this specific procedure typically regain pre-diagnosis functionality after 12 to 18 months.

The road back was arduous. Papa’s treatment was complicated by life-threatening lung issues that recently left him dependent on five liters of oxygen through a nasal cannula; a trip to the bathroom left him gasping for air, and he began researching lung transplants. As of Friday, however, his oxygen equipment was removed from his home entirely.

Papa was previously the 49ers’ radio voice and appeared on the sidelines before the team’s 2025 regular-season finale against Seattle at Levi’s Stadium on Jan. 3 — his first game back after initial treatment. A four-time California Sportscaster of the Year, he has spent four decades addressing Bay Area sports audiences.

NBC Sports Bay Area is part of Comcast’s media operations. Shares of Comcast Corporation (CMCSA) traded at $26.49 on Monday, down 0.64% from the prior close of $26.66, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $94.4 billion.
