Injury picture brightens for Iowa after shutout win over Northern Illinois

Iowa opened its season with a 40-0 blanking of Northern Illinois on Saturday, a performance the Hawkeyes controlled across offense, defense, and special teams. But the afternoon came with a cost: three players left the game, including a running back and two starters along the offensive line.

Running back LJ Phillips Jr. departed before halftime with what coach Kirk Ferentz described after the game as a lower-leg issue. Speaking to reporters after the game, Ferentz said the picture on Phillips would take longer to clarify. “I think we’ll know more tomorrow. LJ probably not even tomorrow, the next couple of days,” he said, adding that the two linemen “are going to be good to go.”

Ground game set the tone

Even with the attrition, Iowa’s rushing attack delivered its most productive outing in some time. Fourth-year back Kamari Moulton broke off touchdown runs of 50 and 37 yards en route to a career-best 183 yards on just 11 carries. The line play that paved those lanes is the same unit the Hawkeyes hope to have intact — with Winter and Pieper expected back — when a far tougher opponent arrives next.

Cy-Hawk rivalry up next

Iowa hosts Iowa State this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT in a nationally televised matchup on Comcast-owned NBC, the network that carries Big Ten football as part of the conference’s media rights portfolio. Comcast, whose shares closed recently at $26.49, down 0.64% on the day, holds rights to Big Ten games under its Media segment, which also includes Peacock streaming coverage of select college football contests.

The stakes for the Hawkeyes extend beyond health updates. Iowa has dropped two straight to the Cyclones, and ending that skid would steady an offseason narrative around a program entering the expanded Big Ten race.
