Álvarez Rejects Club América Return, Closing West Ham’s Exit Route

West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez has shut the door on a move back to Mexico, turning down an approach from Club América ahead of the country’s transfer deadline, according to a report from Fox Sports Mexico journalist Rubén Rodríguez that was carried by Sport Witness on 3 September. The 28-year-old Mexico international reportedly prefers to remain in European football.

The timing mattered because the English transfer window had already shut on Tuesday, while Mexico’s market remains open until 11 September — leaving Club América as the last realistic escape route for the midfielder this window.

Álvarez returned to West Ham after Fox Corporation-affiliated Fenerbahçe opted not to make his loan permanent, despite the player making 34 appearances during the 2025/26 spell. Ajax, Real Sociedad and Olympiacos all registered interest over the summer, but none completed a deal. This season, Álvarez has featured once, playing 75 minutes in the EFL Cup victory over Portsmouth, while manager Nuno Espírito Santo has omitted him from all four league matchday squads.

A Valuation Standoff

West Ham are said to value the midfielder at around €15m, a figure no suitor met before the window closed. With a contract running until June 2028, the club has time on its side and little pressure to sell at a discount. Keeping Álvarez training with the squad rather than discarding him preserves that asset value while avoiding injury risk in the demanding second-tier calendar.

For a club pushing for promotion, integrating an unwilling player carries obvious risks. Nuno has invested in a squad built to handle the physical toll of a 46-game season, and leaving Álvarez on the margins — at least until January, when European clubs can bid again — arguably sends a clearer message about squad commitment.

The decision also reflects a broader dynamic in the transfer market: with different leagues closing at different times, players sometimes find their options narrow to a single destination they are unwilling to accept, forcing clubs to carry squad friction into the season.
