MAC Appeals Michigan’s Controversial Hail Mary Win, Claiming Replay Protocol Was Violated

The fallout from Michigan’s disputed 13-12 victory over Western Michigan escalated Tuesday when the Mid-American Conference formally asked the NCAA and the College Football Playoff to recognize the Broncos as the game’s actual winner.

The conference, which oversees Western Michigan, initially accepted the Big Ten’s explanation for why officials restored one second to the game clock after Michigan’s first Hail Mary attempt fell incomplete. But after further review, the MAC now says replay officials made a procedural error — not a judgment call — and that Western Michigan should have won 12-7.

What Went Wrong

According to the MAC, established replay protocol requires officials to determine whether time remains based solely on the game clock displayed on the program feed — the broadcast clock visible in-stadium and to viewers. Instead, the Big Ten’s replay crew relied on a separate clock embedded within its replay system. The two feeds were not synchronized.

The clock inserted into NBC’s replays showed 0:00 when Western Michigan’s Micah Davis — who had leapt from out of bounds — touched the ball. Hours after the game, the Big Ten pointed to a separate camera its replay center had trained on a clock throughout the game, which showed one second remaining.

On that basis, officials put a second back on the clock and gave Michigan an untimed final play, which the Wolverines converted into a game-winning Hail Mary. The MAC argues the error was one of protocol application, not judgment, and that no additional play should have been awarded under the rules.

The Appeal

The MAC has submitted formal appeals to the NCAA FBS Oversight Committee and the College Football Playoff, requesting that Western Michigan be recognized as the winner “for purposes of their respective rankings, evaluations and selection deliberations” and that any other corrective action within their authority be taken.

The broadcast element adds an industry dimension to the dispute. The game aired on Comcast-owned NBC, whose replay feeds became central evidence in the argument — the program-feed clock showed the game clock had expired at the moment Davis touched the ball. Comcast (CMCSA) shares closed at $26.19, down 1.52% from the prior close of $26.59, with a market capitalization of roughly $92.5 billion.

It remains unclear what recourse, if any, the NCAA or CFP bodies have to alter the official result of a completed regular-season game, and the Big Ten has not publicly responded to the appeal.
