MAC commissioner explains appeal in Michigan–Western Michigan clock controversy

Mid-American Conference commissioner Jon Steinbrecher says replay officials were instructed to work from the game feed of the clock — not the version embedded in the replay system — as his conference pursues a formal appeal of the controversial finish in the Sept. 12 game between Western Michigan and Michigan at Michigan Stadium.

Steinbrecher watched the ending unfold on television. With no time showing on the clock during the NBC broadcast, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood’s Hail Mary sailed out of the end zone, and Steinbrecher assumed the play would go to review without incident.

“I was certain that the play would be reviewed,” Steinbrecher said. “From there, you’re off to the races. You don’t know what it’s going to show.”

Instead, officials restored one second to the clock after review, giving Michigan another snap. Underwood then connected with JJ Buchanan on a 47-yard Hail Mary, giving the Wolverines a 13-12 win. On Tuesday, the MAC submitted formal appeals to the FBS oversight committee and the College Football Playoff asking that Western Michigan be recognized as the winner.

“You’re disappointed it’s not being recorded as a ‘W’ right now,” Steinbrecher said. “I think (Western Michigan) made a statement that people will remember.”

Clock feed at the center of the dispute

The MAC, reversing an earlier position, said in a new statement that it is “now evident that replay protocol was not followed in determining whether time remained on the game clock.” According to the statement, the Big Ten replay crew relied on a clock feed within its replay system rather than the game clock displayed to television viewers.

Steinbrecher confirmed that the presence of two separate clock feeds is the core issue. “There is a protocol to be followed. We’re instructed to utilize the game feed,” he said, adding that the Big Ten may be the only conference whose replay system incorporates an incoming feed with a clock built into it. “That’s kind of where we’re at.”
