NBC Sports Aligns NFL Ratings With Nielsen’s Standard Methodology
NBC Sports is changing how it reports its NFL viewership, moving away from its in-house blended metric and toward Nielsen’s standard measurement for linear TV and streaming, beginning with Wednesday night’s season opener between the Patriots and Seahawks, according to a report from Front Office Sports.
Until now, the Comcast-owned network had relied on Total Audience Delivery (TAD), a figure that merges Nielsen’s Big Data + Panel measurement with digital data from Adobe Analytics. That hybrid approach drew repeated objections from Nielsen and competing networks, which took issue with NBC Sports making audience claims built on blended numbers.
The dispute escalated over the summer during the FIFA men’s World Cup, when Fox issued viewership releases using Nielsen figures alone while NBCUniversal’s Telemundo leaned on the TAD blend — and also highlighted the tournament’s growing reach among non-Spanish speakers. Nielsen subsequently tightened its position, telling networks that combining internal or third-party data with Nielsen metrics for comparative press statements is not permissible.
What the Shift Covers — and What It Doesn’t
The adoption of Nielsen’s full methodology begins on a trial basis running through January and will initially apply to NFL broadcasts and coverage of the MLB wild-card playoffs. Decisions are still pending elsewhere: NBC Sports has not determined its measurement approach for the NBA when rights coverage begins with the 2026-27 season, and it will keep using TAD for college football — though without making public comparisons against other broadcasters.
Adobe Analytics remains in use for digital content measurement, now supplemented by Nielsen auditing, and FreeWheel continues to handle internal streaming measurement for monetization.
The stakes are high for NBC’s flagship franchise. Sunday Night Football is pursuing a 16th consecutive season as the most-watched primetime program on U.S. television across all genres, and alignment with Nielsen’s standard clears the way for full marketing of that milestone without measurement disputes.
The network also wants a clean start to its 2026 NFL slate. Last year’s Kickoff game between the Cowboys and Eagles was tracking toward a record audience before a 65-minute weather delay derailed the numbers.
Measurement in Flux
NBC’s move lands amid broader upheaval in TV audience measurement. In late August, Nielsen rolled out significant changes to its own methodology, including updates tied to co-viewing — changes that are reshaping how networks across the industry count and compare audiences.
Shares of Comcast (CMCSA), NBC Sports’s parent company, closed at $24.33, down 7.61% from the prior close of $26.33, valuing the company at roughly $92.5 billion.
