NBC Sports Bets Big on Wednesday NFL Kickoff as Scheduling Norms Shift

The NFL’s decision to open its 2026 season on a Wednesday rather than the traditional Thursday could prove more than a one-off, according to NBC Sports executives and announcers, who say the league’s flexibility around game days is likely to expand in the years ahead.

Play-by-play voice Mike Tirico told reporters he expects the Wednesday opener to stick if audiences show up for the marquee matchup: a Super Bowl LX rematch between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.

“I think the NFL is such an entertainment powerhouse that people will adjust their lives and schedules for the right matchup and the right game,” Tirico said, noting that the midweek slot also clears space for a Thursday night game played in Australia — Thursday evening in the U.S., Friday morning locally in Melbourne.

The league set the unusual Week 1 calendar in March as part of its push into international games, while also sidestepping calendar restrictions tied to the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, which protects college and high school football windows. That constraint nudged the defending champion Seahawks’ kickoff game to Wednesday.

A Full Promotional Push

NBCUniversal has leaned into the oddity with a broad marketing campaign, including a “Hump Day” spot featuring Tirico, Cris Collinsworth, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and a camel, plus NFL-themed programming across sister networks and a “Race to Wednesday” tour that sent a custom football from Boston to Seattle.

Collinsworth suggested more flexibility is coming. “I think the schedule is going to have to be more flexible as we go along,” he said. “You can put it on every night of the week for me.”

Wednesday’s opener isn’t the only midweek game on the 2026 slate: a Thanksgiving Eve matchup between the Rams and Packers is set to stream on Netflix, another window the league expects to draw heavy viewership.

What’s at Stake for Comcast

The opener matters commercially for Comcast (CMCSA), whose NBC Sports division carries the game. Last year’s Thursday kickoff between the Cowboys and Eagles was tracking toward a record audience before a 65-minute weather delay derailed the ratings. Shares of Comcast, which operates across connectivity, media, studios and theme parks, closed at $26.33 previously and were trading at $24.87, down 5.55% on the day, valuing the company at roughly $92.5 billion.

NBC will report viewership using established Nielsen methodologies this season following preseason friction over measurement.

What to watch

  • Official Nielsen viewership figures for the Wednesday opener, and whether the Patriots-Seahawks rematch approaches kickoff-game records.
  • Audience numbers for the Rams-Packers Thanksgiving Eve game on Netflix.
  • Future NFL schedule releases for additional midweek and international windows.
