Arizona Soccer Chases Offensive Rhythm Ahead of NAU Showdown at Mulcahy

The Arizona Wildcats women’s soccer team enters the final stretch of nonconference play still looking for a reliable attacking identity. At 2-3-1, the Wildcats sit at No. 188 in Division I with a -1 goal differential — an improvement over last season’s finish at No. 239 and -6, but a mark that trails Thursday’s opponent.

Northern Arizona, also 2-3-1 on the year, arrives ranked No. 159 with a +1 differential. The Lumberjacks are a familiar foe for head coach Becca Moros’s squad: the two programs meet regularly in the regular season and have also squared off in spring exhibition play.

History Favors the Wildcats — But Finishing Remains the Question

Past results suggest Arizona should have chances to find its footing. The Wildcats edged NAU 1-0 in an exhibition in Flagstaff last season, and two years ago in Tucson they rolled to a 5-0 victory in the regular-season meeting. Notably, the last time Arizona scored five goals in a match came nearly a year to the day, in a 5-2 win over GCU on Sept. 14.

Last week, however, demonstrated how elusive goals have become. Despite dominating Dartmouth statistically — a 14-1 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in shots on goal — the Wildcats fell 1-0 when the Big Green converted its only attempt of the match.

Moros and her players have emphasized creating chances on their own terms rather than relying on opponents’ errors. Freshman midfielder Emerson Stoft pointed to decision-making in the attacking zone as the key area for improvement.

“I think just in the final third, just realizing when to move, the right time to move,” Stoft said. “I just think that we couldn’t do that in the final third in Dartmouth, and that happens. But just moving forward, being more organized and being more focused in the final third and knowing when to open up and move for other players.”

The Week Ahead

Arizona hosts the Lumberjacks on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. MST at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium, with coverage on ESPN+ — the streaming platform operated by Disney, whose sports division remains a major distributor of college athletics. The Walt Disney Company (DIS) traded at $104.80, up 0.6% from its previous close of $104.18, giving the entertainment conglomerate a market capitalization of roughly $181.8 billion.

The Wildcats then travel to Malibu, Calif. to face Pepperdine (2-2-2) on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 12 p.m. MST at Tari Frahm Rokus Field, also streamed on ESPN+.

What to watch

  • Whether Arizona can convert its shot volume into goals against NAU on Friday night at Mulcahy.
  • How the Wildcats’ attack fares on the road against a Pepperdine side holding a 2-2-2 record.
  • Whether the team’s goal differential improves before Big 12 conference play begins.
