A new mural in south Belfast now pays tribute to two of Northern Ireland’s most celebrated sports figures: former IBF World Welterweight Champion Lewis Crocker and football legend George Best. The artwork, located on Blythe Street in the Sandy Row area, was officially unveiled Thursday evening and replaces a long-standing mural dedicated solely to Best, placing the two athletes side by side.

Crocker, who attended the unveiling in person, described the moment as the realization of a childhood dream. He noted that growing up in Sandy Row, he never imagined he would one day be pictured alongside Best on the same wall.

The project came together after months of discussion, according to DUP councillor Tracy Kelly, who helped organize the tribute. She explained that the area already honors snooker champion Alex Higgins, making a dedication to Crocker a natural next step. Kelly added that keeping Best on the wall alongside Crocker was important to residents, given that the footballer’s image had been a fixture there for two decades.

Local reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Businessman Ben Allen said the mural brings something positive to the Sandy Row commercial district, noting that Best remains a major draw for tourists and that pairing him with the neighborhood’s homegrown champion strengthens the display’s appeal.

Residents who gathered for the ceremony echoed that enthusiasm. Jack Burke, who sports a tattoo of Crocker, called him the toughest boxer around, while Johnathan Johnston said the community had been buzzing about the tribute and that he had always believed Crocker would become a world champion.

The mural underscores how sports imagery continues to shape local identity and foot traffic in neighborhoods like Sandy Row, where athlete-driven landmarks can carry real cultural and even commercial weight.
