Everton Rule Out January Move for Right-Back, Backing Maitland-Niles and Internal Cover

Manager David Moyes is expected to rotate Maitland-Niles with Merlin Rohl for the starting role, while James Garner and Jake O’Brien provide additional cover on the flank. On the opposite side, Jarrad Branthwaite and Garner can deputise should Vitalii Mykolenko be unavailable.

The decision follows a frustrating summer window for the Friedkin Group. Everton’s preferred target, Celtic’s Alistair Johnston, saw a proposed move fall through after an injury, and a deal for Folarin Balogun also collapsed. Despite those setbacks, the hierarchy has concluded that investment in a specialist defender can wait until a later window.

Depth Concerns Linger

The club’s approach leaves little margin for error. Maitland-Niles offers versatility, and Rohl’s willingness to fill in at right-back has been useful, but neither is a natural long-term specialist in the position. Similarly, pulling Garner or O’Brien wide would thin out central midfield or central defence respectively, creating gaps elsewhere in the squad if injuries or suspensions pile up over a congested fixture schedule.

Missing out on Johnston, the original first-choice target, underscored the position as an identified need. The modest outlay for Maitland-Niles partially addressed it, though the club’s choice to stand pat in January will test whether the internal options can hold up across a full campaign. Supporters hoping for a sustained push toward European qualification may view the restraint as a signal of limited appetite for further spending, though it also reflects a conservative approach to squad-building after a window that fell short of initial plans.
