Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa leaves drills with apparent back discomfort ahead of Week 1

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa raised alarms during Thursday’s practice after reportedly showing signs of physical discomfort during individual throwing drills.

According to Josh Kendall of The Athletic, Tagovailoa appeared to experience discomfort and briefly went to the ground during the session. Kendall noted the quarterback had previously missed the first week of training camp with lower back spasms, making the latest episode a potential recurrence of an existing issue.

ESPN’s Marc Raimondi, who also covered the practice, offered additional detail. He reported that during the portion of practice open to media, Tagovailoa touched his back and sat briefly on the grass during individual drills. Raimondi said it was not immediately clear what had occurred, and that the quarterback did not appear to throw again afterward — though he cautioned that media access covers only a small slice of the full practice.

Why the timing matters for Atlanta

The development comes at a difficult moment for the Falcons’ quarterback room. Atlanta has already ruled out Michael Penix Jr. for Week 1 as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL, leaving the depth chart thin behind Tagovailoa.

Veteran Cooper Rush currently sits as the top backup and would be in line to start if Tagovailoa cannot play, with rookie Jack Strand also on the roster as the third option.

Tagovailoa joined Atlanta amid significant offseason attention, and his availability was expected to anchor the team’s offensive plans early in the season. Any extended absence would shift those expectations onto Rush, a journeyman backup with extensive starting experience from his tenure in Dallas.

Market context

Quarterback availability carries financial stakes beyond the field, given the league’s broadcast partnerships. The Walt Disney Company, whose ESPN and ABC networks carry NFL programming, saw shares trade at $104.95 in recent activity, up 0.74% from the prior close of $104.18, with a market capitalization of roughly $181.8 billion. Coverage of high-profile storylines like Atlanta’s quarterback situation feeds directly into the sports media ecosystem that drives viewership for NFL broadcast partners.

The Falcons have not issued an official statement on Tagovailoa’s status following Thursday’s session, and his participation in upcoming practices will be the clearest indicator of whether the issue is minor.

What to watch

  • Tagovailoa’s practice participation and designation on Atlanta’s injury report in the coming days
  • Any official comment from the Falcons’ coaching staff on the quarterback’s Week 1 availability
  • Michael Penix Jr.’s continued recovery from a torn ACL and his timetable to return
