But he paired that optimism with an unsparing caveat: a repeat of last year’s slow start could put head coach Zac Taylor’s job in jeopardy before Halloween.

“Or they could start slow again, and Zac Taylor could be gone by mid-October,” Vacchiano wrote. “It’s a coin flip.”

The warning lands after a 6-11 finish in 2025 marked Cincinnati’s third consecutive season without a playoff berth. NFL.com has likewise flagged the franchise among the league’s most pressure-filled teams heading into 2026, noting that Taylor “absolutely will feel pressure to win — or else.”

The early schedule offers little cushion. The Bengals open at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then travel to Houston and Pittsburgh. Games against Jacksonville and Miami follow before a Week 6 bye — a stretch that could effectively determine whether the season stays on track.

Taylor has weathered slow starts in previous years, but three straight postseason absences have raised the stakes. With Burrow healthy and expectations at contender level, organizational patience for a September stumble may be limited.

The commentary comes via Fox Corporation, whose FOX Sports platform has made NFL coverage a centerpiece of its sports programming. Fox shares traded at $63.86 in recent activity, down about 0.22% from a prior close of $64.00, valuing the media company at roughly $26.85 billion.
