Gophers ready to showcase transformed gameday experience as SEC foe Mississippi State visits Minneapolis

When Minnesota last welcomed a Southeastern Conference program to Minneapolis, the Gophers were playing in Memorial Stadium and Dwight Eisenhower was in the White House. That 1959 matchup against Vanderbilt will finally get a sequel of sorts this Saturday, when Mississippi State visits Huntington Bank Stadium for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff broadcast nationally on CBS.

The venue itself is a product of a long rebuild. Minnesota returned to on-campus football in 2009, and the program has spent the years since cultivating an environment at the roughly 50,000-seat stadium that now sits in the respectable middle tier of the Big Ten — behind the conference’s marquee atmospheres at Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan, but no longer an afterthought.

Engagement has been notable even in low-stakes games. The student section showed up in force for the season opener against Eastern Illinois despite classes not yet being in session, something head coach P.J. Fleck highlighted this week.

“I’d love to thank our student section,” Fleck said Monday. “That was an incredible atmosphere they created.”

The on-field results have reinforced the momentum. Minnesota enters the weekend having won eight straight home games and sporting a 12-3 record in Minneapolis since the start of the 2024 season. Fleck, who arrived in 2017, has also leaned into tradition-building, including a new “ROW” chant before kickoff led by former linebacker Kamal Martin.

Saturday represents just the third home nonconference game against a power-conference opponent of the Fleck era, and the crowd could play a direct role. Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor, a highly regarded prospect, is expected to make his first career road start in front of a “Gold Out” crowd.

“This is what college football is all about,” Fleck said. “The fans want to see these types of matchups.”

Beyond the sideline, the matchup underscores the commercial value of marquee nonconference scheduling and national broadcast windows. Sports-adjacent media and marketing technology companies continue to chase engagement around such events; among small-cap names in the space, Banzai International (PARA) closed at $1.04 previously and traded recently at $1.03, down 0.48%, with a market capitalization of roughly $3.6 million.

For Minnesota, the formula is straightforward: favorable weather, a national TV audience and an SEC visitor with an inexperienced road quarterback — conditions the program hopes will produce one of the loudest afternoons at Huntington Bank Stadium in years.
