Harbaugh Draws a Hard Line With Giants Reporters Ahead of Cowboys Opener

New Giants head coach John Harbaugh made clear Wednesday that competitive secrecy comes before press conference pleasantries, refusing to reveal anything about personnel or game planning ahead of Sunday’s Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.

Harbaugh arrives in New York after 18 seasons leading the Baltimore Ravens, hired to reverse a franchise slide that produced a 3-14 record in 2024, a 4-13 finish in 2025, and the mid-season firing of Brian Daboll last year, with Mike Kafka serving as interim coach. The Giants have not reached the postseason since 2022 and have not won seven games in any of the last three seasons.

Nothing free before kickoff

At Wednesday’s availability, reporters pressed Harbaugh on Malik Nabers’ status, starting lineup decisions, and how the offense intends to attack Dallas. Harbaugh declined all of it, telling the room he would not disclose who is starting, which packages are installed, or what plays are planned — because doing so, in his view, would compromise the Giants against a strong opponent. He pointed out that the league’s official injury report and the game-day inactive list will eventually settle whatever questions he is sidestepping this week.

The biggest storyline is Nabers, who practiced fully and took contact in pads Wednesday after sitting out the entire preseason. The wide receiver tore his ACL and meniscus in Week 4 of the 2025 season, underwent reconstruction, and then required a second procedure earlier this year to remove scar tissue causing stiffness. Harbaugh said in May that predicting the receiver’s return was “impossible.”

Nabers has been equally guarded about his own availability, declining last week to commit to playing against Dallas and saying only that he is focused on being healthy enough to play every snap once the regular season begins.

Media and market context

The run-up to the game is unfolding amid heavy coverage across NFL media partners, including ESPN, part of The Walt Disney Company (DIS). Disney shares traded at $105.16 in recent trading, up 0.94% from a prior close of $104.18, with a market capitalization of roughly $181.84 billion.

Sunday marks the first competitive test of the Harbaugh era, with second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart and a healthy — presumably — Nabers anchoring the offense against a division rival.

What to watch

  • The league’s official injury report and Sunday’s inactive list for confirmation on Nabers’ status.
  • Snap counts and usage for Nabers in his first action since the Week 4, 2025 knee injury.
  • Jaxson Dart’s performance in Harbaugh’s offensive system against an NFC East opponent.
