Jacobs Pleads No Contest Ahead of Week 1, Casting Shadow Over Packers Backfield and Fantasy Drafts

Content warning: This article references allegations of domestic violence.

Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs entered a no-contest plea Thursday to misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property, moving his court date up from November on the eve of Week 1. Addressing the court, Jacobs said he understood the gravity of the matter and accepted responsibility.

The resolution carries a $1,000 fine and five conditions of his plea: no further criminal conduct, no contact with the alleged victim, supervision, counseling, and restitution to the victim. Reports indicate he will not serve jail time.

NFL discipline looms

The league’s next move is the central question. Jacobs is currently on the commissioner’s exempt list following his offseason arrest, and any games missed on that list would count toward a future suspension, with salary forfeiture for those games a likely consequence. The NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy sets a baseline of six games for domestic violence cases. While Wisconsin authorities did not classify the case as domestic violence — the alleged victim was not living with Jacobs — the league is expected to treat it as such. Precedent exists for reductions from the six-game baseline, but an absence of roughly six games beginning in Week 1 is viewed as the most probable outcome.

Fantasy fallout

For fantasy managers, the timing is about as favorable as circumstances allow. With running back depth boards largely intact before Week 1 and no byes yet in effect, replacements remain available. The ruling also shortens the evaluation window for MarShawn Lloyd, Kaleb Johnson and Chris Brooks, who now have a defined stretch to compete for carries. Jacobs finished last season as the RB12 while operating as Green Bay’s bellcow, and a heavy workload upon return would keep him in upside-RB2 conversations.

The case is not fully closed, however. The criminal complaint references video evidence of part of the altercation, and ESPN, the Disney-owned sports network, has reported details about what the footage does and does not show. ESPN’s parent company, The Walt Disney Company (DIS), closed at $105.68 on Thursday, up 1.44% from the prior close of $104.18, with a market capitalization of approximately $181.8 billion. ESPN’s coverage of the case continues to draw national attention to the league’s handling of off-field conduct matters.

What to watch

  • Whether the NFL announces a formal suspension and its length in the coming days or weeks
  • How credit for time served on the commissioner’s exempt list is applied to any suspension
  • Jacobs’s status on Green Bay’s Week 1 roster and injury/report designations
  • Carry distribution among Lloyd, Johnson and Brooks during Jacobs’s absence
  • Any updates to the criminal complaint or restitution terms
