Mike Tomlin’s NBC Booth Debut Features a Flub, a Laugh and a Smooth Transition from the Sideline

Mike Tomlin’s first regular-season appearance in a television studio had all the hallmarks of a veteran communicator — with one small stumble along the way.

The longtime Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, who joined NBC’s “Football Night in America” as an analyst this season, made his regular-season debut ahead of the Week 1 matchup between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. During the broadcast, Tomlin more than once referred to Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba — widely known around the league by his initials “JSN” — as “JNS.”

Host Maria Taylor was quick to needle him for it. “I’m not going to let you do it again,” she joked on air. Tomlin took the correction in stride, laughing it off before resuming his breakdown of the Seahawks.

The exchange underscored what was otherwise a well-received first outing. Tomlin had already logged a trial run on the show ahead of the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 6, but Sunday marked his first regular-season appearance — the kind of telecast viewers actually remember.

His 18-plus years of NFL head-coaching experience surfaced throughout the show. Discussing Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, Tomlin recalled his own emotions while preparing the Steelers’ defense for their Week 3 meeting with New England last season, offering the kind of firsthand perspective the studio role is designed to showcase.

Tomlin and Taylor also showed easy rapport, trading jokes after a segment on the Seahawks’ locker-room shadowboxing routine — with Tomlin riffing on the jabs literally headed his way.

Tomlin is part of a broader refresh at “Football Night in America,” the studio show that precedes “Sunday Night Football” and NBC’s other primetime NFL windows. This season, the program will originate on location from every game site rather than solely from its New York studio.

Market context

NBC’s NFL studio coverage sits within the Media segment of Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA), which also spans studios, theme parks, and residential and business connectivity. Shares of Comcast closed at $24.59, down 6.61% from the prior close of $26.33, valuing the company at roughly $92.5 billion.
