MLB Postseason Picture Takes Shape With Three Weeks Left in the 2026 Regular Season

The 2026 MLB regular season is entering its final stretch, and with the postseason set to begin Sept. 29, no club has yet locked up a playoff berth — though several are on the verge.

Heading into games on Sept. 10, the Milwaukee Brewers hold the league’s lowest magic number at 1, positioning them to become the first team to punch a ticket to October. In the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays lead the way with a magic number of 2.

Projected Bracket

In the AL, the projected wild-card matchups would send Cleveland to Houston to face the Astros, with the winner advancing to face the second-seeded Chicago White Sox in the Division Series. The other AL wild-card series pits Boston against the New York Yankees, with the victor meeting top-seeded Tampa Bay.

Over in the National League, San Diego would travel to Atlanta for a wild-card series, with the winner earning a date with the second-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers. Chicago’s Cubs would face Philadelphia in the other NL wild-card matchup, with the winner taking on the No. 1 seed Milwaukee.

Who’s Close to Clinching

FanGraphs’ projection model gives five National League clubs playoff odds above 96%: the Brewers, Dodgers, Braves, Phillies and Cubs. Milwaukee, Atlanta and Los Angeles currently sit in position to win their divisions, while Philadelphia holds the top wild-card slot, with Chicago and San Diego also in wild-card position.

In the American League, the Rays, Yankees and Red Sox each carry playoff odds of 99% or better. Tampa Bay, the White Sox and Astros lead their divisions, while New York, Boston and Cleveland occupy the wild-card spots.

The wild-card races remain fluid, however, with clubs like Toronto still in the hunt as the final weeks play out.

For publicly traded MLB stakeholders, the postseason race carries financial significance. Atlanta Braves Holdings (NASDAQ: BATRK), which owns and operates the Braves along with the mixed-use development around Truist Park, recently traded at $49.46, down 0.74% from its prior close of $49.83, valuing the company at roughly $3.24 billion. A playoff appearance would add home postseason dates — and associated revenue — to the club’s calendar.

What to watch

  • Milwaukee’s magic number of 1 and Tampa Bay’s of 2 — both could clinch as early as this week.
  • Remaining wild-card battles, including Toronto’s pursuit of an AL berth, with daily standings updates through the end of the regular season.
  • Division races in the NL West, NL East and NL Central, which determine seeding and home-field advantages.
  • MLB’s postseason schedule, beginning Sept. 29.
