Netflix Sets October 2 Premiere for Schumacher ’94 Documentary
Netflix has unveiled the trailer for “Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend,” a feature-length documentary focused on Michael Schumacher’s 1994 Formula 1 season, with a global release scheduled for October 2. The film examines the campaign that delivered the first of the German driver’s eventual seven world championships.
The documentary narrows its scope to a single year — one that was both triumphant and turbulent. Schumacher, then 25, won eight races and clinched the drivers’ title by just one point over Damon Hill, a margin decided at the Australian season finale after a collision between the two eliminated both cars. The film is also expected to tackle the controversy surrounding allegations that Schumacher’s Benetton team ran illegal traction control software during the season.
Streaming rights to such content underscore the sport’s growing media footprint. Formula One Group (NASDAQ: FWONK), which holds the commercial rights to the FIA Formula One World Championship, has seen demand for F1 storytelling extend well beyond race broadcasts, with documentaries and docuseries playing an increasing role in expanding the sport’s audience. Formula One Group shares closed the latest session at $95.88, down 1.38% from the prior close of $97.22, valuing the entertainment company at roughly $23.8 billion.
The film’s subject matter extends beyond the title fight. The 1994 season remains among the most somber in the sport’s history: Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger were both killed in separate accidents during the San Marino Grand Prix weekend. The documentary’s account of the season situates Schumacher’s breakthrough against that backdrop of tragedy, which ultimately reshaped Formula 1’s approach to safety.
A Tribute at Monza
The trailer’s debut timed with the Italian Grand Prix weekend, where Ferrari mounted its own tribute to the driver who claimed five of his seven titles with the Scuderia after joining in 1996. The SF-26 ran a special livery in a deeper red drawing from the F310 — the first Ferrari Schumacher raced — with his “MS” logo and seven stars on the nose. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc competed in one-off suits, and Leclerc revealed a helmet created in Schumacher’s honor.
Netflix is promoting the release with the tagline “One goal. One season. The start of something great,” positioning 1994 as the launching point of a career that would come to define an era of the sport.
