Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has made no secret of his admiration for defender Lewis Hall, revealing that the club rejected interest from Manchester United earlier this summer and that the 22-year-old is now expected to commit his future to the club.

According to Jaissle, former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel contacted him last month to say his old club were monitoring Hall. The coach’s answer was blunt: “No chance.” Newcastle parted with several high-profile players during a summer of significant squad turnover — Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon all departed — but Hall was considered untouchable.

“Without speaking about his contract, I can just say that I’m in love with what I’ve seen so far from him,” Jaissle told reporters on Thursday, adding that he hopes the defender stays “in the long term.”

Hall has become a regular attacking outlet under Jaissle and registered his second assist of the campaign this week, setting up Joe Willock’s late winner in Newcastle’s 1-0 Carabao Cup triumph at Millwall. The left-sided defender is also pushing for a return to the England setup after missing the World Cup squad.

“He’s fitting so good to this identity, how we want to play football,” Jaissle said. “Again he’s doing an excellent job.”
