The Good Life Announces Himself as Early Kentucky Derby Hopeful With Hopeful Stakes Romp

The road to the first Saturday in May runs through Churchill Downs, and one unbeaten two-year-old has already staked an early claim. The Good Life, a colt trained by Brad Cox, delivered a dominant performance in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga, closing out the summer meet with a statement victory in one of the juvenile calendar’s most historically significant races.

Breaking sharply from the inside post under jockey Manny Franco, The Good Life seized the lead immediately and set brisk fractions of 22.71 for the opening quarter and 45.40 for the half-mile. The son of Life Is Good reached the top of the stretch 3 ½ lengths in front and only extended his advantage from there, drawing off to win the seven-furlong test by a widening 4 lengths, unchallenged through the final furlong.

The final time was 1:24.08. The victory keeps the colt perfect in two career starts; he debuted with a 3 ½-length win going six furlongs. Owned by WinStar Farms LLC, First Go Racing and CHC Inc., he has now earned $228,250. His next start has not yet been determined.

Cox, who has surpassed 2,500 career victories, praised his colt’s prospects. “He looks to be a very nice young horse with a big future,” he said, adding that the colt’s sire, Life Is Good, is an exciting young stallion with the potential to influence the breed for years.

A Storied Race, A Long Drought

The Hopeful Stakes has been a launching pad for elite juveniles since 1903, with a winner’s list filled with champions. But the last horse to parlay a Hopeful victory into Kentucky Derby glory was Affirmed in 1977 — a colt who went on to sweep the Triple Crown. History, in other words, offers no guarantees to Saratoga’s summer stars.
