Kenny Bednarek Chases First Individual Gold at Inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship

Sprinter Kenny Bednarek heads into the first-ever World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest with perhaps the highest stakes of his career on the line. The 27-year-old American, nicknamed “Kung Fu Kenny,” is set to contest both the 100m on Saturday and the 200m on Sunday at the new biennial meet, which runs Sept. 11–13 and is being broadcast in the U.S. on NBC Sports and Peacock — properties of Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA).

Bednarek arrives in Hungary with a resume stacked with near-misses at the top: two Olympic silver medals and two World Championship silver medals, all in the 200m. His form backs up the billing. In his two most recent meets, Bednarek recorded the fastest 200m times in the world in 2026, clocking 19.62 seconds on both occasions. He enters as one of the favorites in the 100m and the favorite in the 200m.

The sprinter described an especially demanding training block in the lead-up. “We’ve been training just like it’s another championship,” he said, noting that this year’s regimen was more grueling than last year’s and pushed him to his physical limits on several occasions.

Beyond the track, Bednarek is expanding his media footprint. He is producing a YouTube documentary series, The Ultimate Pursuit, chronicling a weekslong European stint that culminates in Budapest. The opening episode explores his personal background, including his adoption story and his path to the top of the sport.

For Comcast, the meet adds another premium live sporting property to NBC Sports and Peacock’s lineup, a category the media conglomerate has continued to invest in as streaming competition intensifies. Comcast shares traded at $25.17 in recent action, up 0.48% from a prior close of $25.05, valuing the company at roughly $92.5 billion.

The Ultimate Championship marks a new fixture on the global athletics calendar, and Bednarek’s dual sprint entries give the inaugural edition one of its marquee storylines: a perennial silver medalist with world-leading times seeking the individual crown that has so far eluded him.
