T. Wingate Andrews to Welcome 12th Hall of Fame Class, Including 1976 Championship Football Team

HIGH POINT, N.C. — T. Wingate Andrews High School will honor six former athletes and coaches, along with one of the school’s most celebrated teams, at its 12th athletic hall of fame induction ceremony Thursday at the High Point Elks Club.

The 1976 4A state championship football team will be enshrined alongside the individual inductees, spanning graduation years from 1973 to 2013.

The Class of Inductees

Bryan Colquitt (2007) headlines a group rich in golf history. A two-time all-state selection (2004 and 2007), Colquitt posted a pair of fourth-place individual finishes at the NCHSAA State Golf Championships and was named Piedmont Triad 3A Player of the Year. His all-conference honors came in two leagues — Mid-State 2A in 2004 and 2005, then Piedmont Triad 3A in 2006 and 2007.

Breck Culler (1973) starred in football, basketball and golf, earning all-conference recognition on both offensive and defensive line. A member of the 1972 4A state title team, he was named Most Improved Defensive Player and played in the North-South Boys Home Game at East Carolina’s Ficklen Stadium before continuing his career at Clemson.

Coach Tom Harger served as defensive coordinator on Bob Boswell’s staff from 1970 to 1973, a stretch in which Andrews went 30-3-1 and won the 1972 state championship behind a defense allowing just 5.5 points per game — best in the state. He also coached swimming, wrestling and baseball, guiding the 1972 baseball team to the 4A championship series. He later became an athletic director, assistant principal and principal in the Eden Morehead school system.

Dwayne “DD” Harp (1978) was a two-sport standout, twice named Most Outstanding Offensive Player in football while helping the 1976 squad capture a state title. He averaged 16.5 points per game in basketball before joining the Air Force, where he earned Stars and Stripes MVP honors in 1985.

Nora McKiver (2013) brought the most decorated track résumé in the class: eight state championships, two 2A state records in the 300-meter hurdles, All-American status as a senior and a Gatorade Athlete of the Year nomination. She continued at Virginia Tech, earning four all-conference selections, qualifying for the USA Indoor National Championships in the 60-meter hurdles and contributing to the Hokies’ 2017 ACC Outdoor Track & Field title.

Nasheena Quick (2002) rounds out the class.
