American Sprinters Sweep 100m Titles at Inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship

Budapest hosted the first-ever World Athletics Ultimate Championship this weekend, and American sprinters wasted little time making history. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Kenny Bednarek each captured 100m gold on Saturday, giving the U.S. a sweep of the marquee sprints at the richest meet track and field has ever staged.

Jefferson-Wooden crossed in 10.62 seconds, a hundredth shy of the personal best she set while winning the 2025 World title. The podium was an Olympic medal rematch: Julien Alfred, the 2024 Paris champion, took second in 10.74, with Paris silver medalist Sha’Carri Richardson third in 10.76. Bednarek’s 9.85 represented the biggest individual victory of his career. The two-time Olympic 200m silver medalist edged 2025 World champion Oblique Seville of Jamaica by five hundredths. He returns to the track Sunday in the 200m, where he owns the world’s fastest time this year. Paris Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles is absent due to injury.

A $10 Million Prize Pool

The biennial Ultimate Championship format brings together 2024 Olympic gold medalists, 2025 World champions, and other top-ranked athletes — with no caps per country. Individual winners collect $150,000 from an overall $10 million purse that World Athletics bills as the largest in the sport’s history. The meet concludes Sunday, airing on NBC and Peacock from 12–3 p.m. ET, with the men’s and women’s 200m, the 400m hurdles, and the men’s 1500m among the remaining events.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Botswana’s Collen Kebinatshipi delivered a statement 400m win, clocking 43.39 — the joint-fifth-fastest time ever — to beat American Rai Benjamin, the 2024 400m hurdles Olympic champion doubling up this weekend, by 76 hundredths. Kebinatshipi, the reigning World champion, has now broken 44 seconds six times in 2026, an unprecedented single-year total. In the women’s 800m, Switzerland’s Audrey Werro capped an undefeated season with a 1:55.88 victory, winning by 38 hundredths.

The broadcast reach of the meet lands squarely in the wheelhouse of Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), whose NBCUniversal unit airs the event across NBC and its Peacock streaming service. Shares of the telecom and media giant closed recently at $25.20, up 0.6% from the prior session’s $25.05 close, with a market capitalization near $92.5 billion.
