A 2-year-old colt bearing the name of Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope delivered a winning debut moment at Churchill Downs, taking a Maiden Special Weight contest during the opening weekend of the track’s September Meet.

Coach Pope, sent off as the even-money favorite, tracked the pace in the one-mile test before surging clear after the final turn. He finished 1½ lengths in front, stopping the clock in 1:35.77 over a fast main track.

The victory came with a familiar name in the saddle. Despite sharing the name, the racehorse has no actual tie to Pope, who took over the Kentucky men’s basketball program with deep Bluegrass State roots. The coach nonetheless acknowledged the win on social media, congratulating McPeek and Ortiz, and noted the coincidence with the Wildcats’ own performance that evening.

The race unfolded as Churchill Downs begins a new fall meet, a key stretch on the racing calendar at the Louisville oval.
