Quinn Points to Discipline and Turnovers as Commanders Open Season in Philadelphia

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn laid out his yardstick for success ahead of Sunday’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, and it starts less with the final score than with the fundamentals: ball security, penalty avoidance, and composure against unfamiliar looks.

Speaking with reporters Friday before the 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff at Lincoln Financial Field, Quinn emphasized that early-season games are often decided by margins his staff can control.

“Week 1, you want to play with good style,” Quinn said. “You want to make sure that you’re playing with good discipline. That comes in the form of the turnover margin; that comes in the form of penalties, where you’re playing as clean as you can.”

The numbers underscore his concern. Last season, Washington was flagged 117 times, one more than its opponents, and its defense managed just eight interceptions, the second-lowest total in the league in 2025.

A Difficult Roadhouse

The opener presents a daunting test. Philadelphia dominated Washington in both meetings at its home stadium during the 2024 campaign, including a 55-23 rout in the NFC Championship Game. The Eagles also took the first matchup last season, 28-19, before resting starters in the regular-season finale, which Washington won 24-17. Philadelphia enters this season as the two-time defending NFC East champion.

Quinn noted that both rosters will face schematic uncertainty in Week 1, with new play callers on either sideline. Washington introduced offensive coordinator David Blough and defensive coordinator Daronte Jones this offseason, while the Eagles brought in Sean Mannion to run the offense and retained longtime defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

“Both sides have some new play callers. So, there’ll be new looks that they haven’t practiced here,” Quinn said. “Having the discipline within the system to play it out and fight through the adversity when those come up — I think those are some of the key points.”
