Replay Ruling on Jared Goff’s Overturned Fumble Hinged on a Little-Known NFL Throwing-Motion Rule

Lions coach Dan Campbell admitted after Sunday’s season opener that even he was unfamiliar with the rule that ultimately swung a pivotal call in Detroit’s 31-30 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints at Ford Field.

With 9:34 remaining in the second quarter, Saints linebacker Chase Young hit quarterback Jared Goff from behind on a third-and-16 play. The ball came out backward, and safety Jonas Sanker returned it 7 yards for what appeared to be a New Orleans touchdown. Instead, referee Alan Eck announced the play had been overturned on replay: officials determined Goff had already begun his throwing motion, making it a forward pass rather than a fumble.

NFL vice president of instant replay Mark Butterworth explained the interpretation in a pool report, noting that if a defender contacts the passer before the throwing motion starts, the result can be a backward pass — but because Goff had already started his windup when Young made contact, the ruling was an incomplete forward pass. He added that quarterbacks are considered to have started the motion once they bring the ball up as part of the windup.

Campbell told reporters he believed Detroit had lost the fumble on the field. “I’ll be the first to say that. I thought we lost that one,” he said, before acknowledging officials judged the arm to be moving forward. “We got one. We’ll take that.”

The call carried outsized weight in the final margin. New Orleans was blanked in the first half but rallied to force overtime, where the teams traded touchdowns before Detroit clinched the win by stopping a 2-point conversion attempt. Had the Saints’ touchdown return stood, New Orleans may have closed it out in regulation.
